Jack Canfield & Bill Cullen

The Power of Visualisation

Jack Canfield, America’s success coach (as featured in The Secret) and Bill Cullen, one of Ireland’s leading businessmen, shared the stage at a recent charity event in Dublin. I was fortunate to be able to speak with both of them.

In this article I want to share some of their key messages with you, especially the importance of visualising and affirming your desired outcomes, that is, the results you want to achieve in your life and career.

What is Visualisation?

We all have an amazing power within us that most of us have never been taught. Elite athletes use it. Those that achieve incredible success use it. And peak performers in all fields are now starting to use it. That power is called visualisation.

The daily practice of visualising what you want to have in your life will accelerate your success for four reasons:
• It activates your creative subconscious which will start generating creative ideas to achieve your goal.
• It programs your brain to more readily perceive and recognise the resources you will need to achieve your dreams.
• It activates the law of attraction, thereby drawing into your life the people, resources, and circumstances you will need to achieve your goals.
• It builds your internal motivation to take the necessary actions to achieve your dreams.

Visualisation is really quite simple. You close your eyes and imagine, in as vivid detail as you can, what you would be looking at if the dream you have, were already realised. You are looking out through your own eyes at the steering wheel of the new car, holding the degree in your hand, seeing the Sydney opera house, whatever the goal or dream is for you.

Athletes call this visualisation process ‘mental rehearsal.’ When I work with athletes and performers a sizeable portion of our work is visualisation. The young GAA players visualise walking into Croke Park on match day, seeing what they are seeing, hearing what they are hearing and most importantly feeling what they would like to be feeling.

“Imagination is like a preview of what life has to offer.”

Create Goal Pictures

Another powerful technique is to create a photograph or picture of yourself with your goal, as if it were already completed. If one of your goals is to own a new car, take your camera with you to the car dealer and have a picture taken of yourself sitting behind the wheel of your dream car. If your goal is to visit Paris, find a picture or poster of the Eiffel Tower and cut out a picture of yourself and place it into the picture. With today's technology, you could probably make an even more convincing image using your computer.

When Jack Canfield was writing the first book in the Chicken Soup for the Soul series, he took a copy of the New York Times best seller list, scanned it into our computer, and using the same font as the newspaper, typed Chicken Soup for the Soul into the number one position. He printed several copies and hung them up around the office. Less than two years later, the book was the number one book in that category and stayed there for over a year. Never forget though that visualisation alone is not enough, to activate the law of attraction you have to take action (‘action’ being the last 6 letters of the word ‘attraction.’)

Index Cards

One of the common themes of all my articles is the importance of goal-setting, having objectives that you are working towards. How will you know you are on the right track unless you know your destination? Here is a simple but effective idea. Write each of your goals on a 3x5 index card and keep those cards with you so you can read them frequently. Another option is to keep them beside your bed so you can review them at night or when you wake. Using the cards as a prompt to visualise the completion of your goal is a powerful way to drift into sleep or to program your mind first thing in the morning.

Expect Results

By writing out your goals and using the power of visualisation, you can achieve amazing results. Visualisation allows you to harness the 18 billion brain cells in your head and get them all working in a singular and purposeful direction.
Your subconscious will become engaged in a process that transforms you forever.
