Conquering the January Blues

Many people find January a gloomy month. It doesn’t have to be that way. Here are 8 tips for conquering the January ‘blues'.

 

1. Get moving.

Hook up your iPod and get your legs moving and your heart pumping. Even a 20 minute walk 3 days a week will boost your fitness levels and give you that ‘feel good’ buzz.

2. An early Spring Clean.

Give your house and work space a good clear out. What can you recycle, sell or simply bin? Sometimes we have to make space for new things to enter our lives!

3. Get over yourself.

Did you know that if you have assets of more than €2200 you are wealthier than half the worlds population? Helping others is a great way to put your own life into perspective. How can you volunteer your services this month?

4. What can you learn?

Shift your focus and set yourself the goal of learning something new, or enhancing your skills in a specific area this month.

5. Fuel your Motivation.

Rather than making a list of what you would like to achieve in 2008 why not get creative and design a collage of your goals. Cut out photos, images and words associated with your goals from magazines or newspapers. Stick them on to a piece of A3 cardboard or into a scrapbook. Just make sure you put it somewhere where you can view it every day.

6. Give away what you would most like to receive.

If you would like more love, respect, friendship etc in your life, then for the month of January practice giving what you would like to have more of in your life. It might sound mad, but it works.

7. Count your Blessings.

Rather than focusing on the credit card statement or counting the days to the next pay cheque, start a ‘Gratitude List.’ Every day this month write a list of 5 things you are thankful for. By the end of the month you will have a lengthy list. Any day you are feeling low, glance down through the list – there is no better mood enhancer!

8. Treat Yourself.

Make a point of doing something you love this month. Perhaps have friends over for dinner, go to the movies, have a massage. What can you do to make yourself laugh more this month? Laughter is natures best anti-depressant.
