‘Tis the season for annual performance
appraisals when managers start checking their lists of employees
who have been naughty or nice.
To ensure you are viewed in the best possible
light at your performance appraisal, you need to do your homework.
Remember, most managers are overworked; most do performance
appraisals because they have to, most want to get them over
with as quickly and as effortlessly as possible, and you can
use these points to your advantage.

Don't sit by and let your boss do all the
work. Come to the review armed with information that demonstrates
what an integral employee you are to the company. You
have to be proactive. Ask when you're scheduled for
a performance review and what you need to do to be prepared
for that meeting. Bring a detailed list of what you
accomplished throughout the year. You will need examples
of your achievements and the more tangible the evidence the
better. Don’t just assume your manager will know what
you have done, there is no harm in subtly refreshing his or
her memory.

Be as specific as you can be in your self-evaluation.
Did a project you worked on achieve its objectives? Did you
complete a task ahead of schedule? List everything you have
done throughout the year that has made a positive impact on
the company. Remember it is no use being wonderful at what you
do, if no one, including your boss knows how efficient you are.
To climb the career ladder you need to balance ‘visibility’
and ‘ability’, ‘confidence’ and ‘competence’.
