Outliers
by Malcolm Gladwell

Success is more than just hard work. To understand what makes some people thrive you have to look at their environment and their cultural history. A fascinating read from the author of Blink and Tipping Point.

What would Barack Obama do?

Like me, I’m sure you watched Barack Obama’s inauguration as US President on January 20th. For me he is a source of inspiration. I feel better about myself when I listen to him, a sign of a true leader. Recently, when faced with challenging decisions, or at times when I’m feeling nervous, I find myself asking ‘what would Barack Obama do if he was in my shoes?’ Such a question is a great way of accessing our inner wisdom.

Having followed Obama's journey to the presidency there are many business and personal lessons we can learn from him.

We need to steer clear of this poverty of ambition, where people want to drive fancy cars and wear nice clothes and live in nice apartments but don't want to work hard to accomplish these things. Everyone should try to realize their full potential.

Combatting Negative Thinking

Negative thinking has a way of creeping into our conversations without us even noticing. How often do you say things like ‘I’d be no good at that!’ or ‘Did you see the state of her?’

Learning to spot these virus-like thoughts and replacing them with something more useful, will make a huge difference in everything you do.

What does it take to be world-class?

Over Christmas I read two fascinating new books, ‘Outliers’ by Malcolm Gladwell and ‘Talent is Over-rated’ by Geoff Colvin. Both books examine what it takes to become world-class in any field. In the article that follows I share with you my learning and my thoughts on the subject.

And finally...

" We need to internalize this idea of excellence. Not many folks spend a lot of time trying to be excellent. "

Welcome to the Feb. '09 edition of Next Steps

He may be the President of the United States, but we can all learn something from Barack Obama. In this month's lead article I share with you 7 lessons I have learned from him.

Combatting negative thinking (useful in these challenging times) and what it takes to become world-class (at anything) are two more articles I think you will find interesting.

I enjoyed reviewing the 36 articles published in Next Steps in 2008 and it was interesting to see which ones got the most clicks! I've included the top 5 most popular articles from 2008. Of course reading them and acting upon them are two different things!

This is the last edition of Next Steps in its current format. Next month will see a new look ezine to coincide with the 50th edition of Next Steps.
