Conquering the January Blues

With the Christmas festivities over, many people find January a gloomy month. It doesn’t have to be that way. Here are 8 tips for conquering the January ‘blues'.

  1. Get moving. Hook up your iPod and get your heart pumping. Even a 20 minute walk 3 days a week will boost your fitness levels and give you that ‘feel good’ buzz.
  2. An early Spring Clean. Give your house and work space a good clear out. What can you recycle, sell or simply bin? Sometimes we have to make space for new things to enter our lives!
  3. Get over yourself. Did you know that if you have assets of more than €2200 you are wealthier than half the worlds population?

Results not Resolutions

Did you make resolutions this year? Are you keeping them?

 

I’ve never been a fan of resolutions, I prefer the word ‘results’, because just as firms will have results by the end of 2008, you will have results in terms of your finances, health, relationships, career etc. So rather than resolving something, why not give some thought to the ‘results’ you would like to achieve during 2008?

Performance Appraisals

Here are some scary statistics-

  • 50% of staff feel their manager does not deal with them honestly during their appraisal.
  • 32% view appraisals as a waste of time.
  • 20% sense their manager only starts thinking about the appraisal once it has started.
  • 20% say their boss rarely or never bothers to act on anything that is discussed.
    (Source: 2007 survey of 3,000 UK employees by Investors in People.)

Most managers view performance appraisals as a necessary evil. As a result, what can be a very effective way of motivating staff is woefully mishandle.
