20 behaviours that negatively impact a company's culture.

How many do you recognise?

1. Winning too much:
The need to win at all costs and in all situations, when it matters and when it is irrelevant.

2. Adding too much value:
The overwhelming desire to add our two cents to every discussion.

3. Passing judgement:
The need to rate others and impose our standards on them.

4. An excessive need to be me.
Exalting our faults as virtues simply because they're who we are.

Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish

It's ‘exam time’ in schools and colleges. In his speech at Stanford University in June 2005 Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Computer and of Pixar Animation shares a powerful and inspiring message.

(If you know anyone graduating school or college, forward this article to them!).

"I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation. Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That's it. No big deal. Just three stories.

People give their best because they are inspired to, not because they are told to. Anon

Holiday Time

But are you capable of switching off?

Most people will take their annual two or three week holiday over the coming months. For some, this is the only time of the year when they feel truly alive. For others they take time off, but can’t actually switch off. And some don’t take a holiday at all.
Into which category do you fall?

How can you leave work behind (even if you are the boss or self-employed) and perhaps even live everyday in the holiday spirit?

Final Thought...

If taking vitamins doesn't keep you healthy enough, try more laughter: The most wasted of all days is that on which one has not laughed."

Welcome to the June ’07 edition of Next Steps

The business theme this month is Staff Motivation and in particular management behaviour that promotes motivation or stifles it.

This is the time of the year when students sit exams and we think of holidays. The lead article this month is a speech delivered by Steve Jobs of Apple Computers, to a graduating class at Stanford University. It is timely and inspiring whether you are a student or not.

FInally are you capable of relaxing? This is the question posed in the article - Holiday Time.
