A conversation
with top Irish athlete
Catherina McKiernan
In the November 2005 edition of Next Steps I shared with you my
experience of running a marathon. Since then I had struggled with
a recurring knee injury but earlier this year I came across
ChiRunning
which has transformed my approach to running and has
enhanced my performance in other areas of life as well.

McKiernan (with the former looking a little flushed after being
put through his paces.)
The only practitioner of ChiRunning in Ireland
is Catherina McKiernan, who in the 1990’s
was not only Ireland’s but one of the worlds top female
distance runners. Among the many milestones in her career were
famous victories in the London, Amsterdam and Berlin Marathons
and four silver medals, in successive years, in the World Cross
Country Championship.
Catherina, what exactly is ChiRunning?
ChiRunning is the correct mechanics for running to make it
effortless and injury free. It is not running but the way you
run that causes injury. If your body movement is incorrect,
you are going to get injured.
ChiRunning also increases mental clarity and focus, enhancing
the joy of running, and transforming running into a safe and
effective lifelong program for health, fitness, and general
well-being.
Some readers may be unfamiliar with the concept
of Chi.
Chi (pronounced chee) is energy, the life giving energy that
unites body, mind and spirit. We all have it. When your Chi
is strong, balanced, flowing and focused you exude energy and
good health.
