Staff Motivation

How can I motivate my staff? How can I improve staff morale? Most managers utter these questions at some point.

Low levels of motivation and poor staff morale are symptoms; from my experience the cause is usually a combination of poor people management skills, lack of trust, ineffective communication and a lack of certainty and consistency as regards what’s important.

I assist and challenge companies to dissolve the barriers that are preventing them from working effectively together. Training workshops in this area rarely start with employees – their behaviour is a symptom, – I start by working with management and team leaders.

Every organisation has its own unique issues, but ultimately organisations are a gathering of human beings all trying to do the best job they can. This belief is central to my work in this area.

All workshops in this area are customised, but themes typically explored include;

  • Facilitating honest communication and a listening environment
  • Shaping a vision of the organisational culture you want to create
  • Identifying quick wins
  • Unlearning destructive behaviours and attitudes
  • Skills transfer in the areas of People Management, Communication and Leadership

Quick Tip

The pronoun test is a quick way to assess the ‘health’ of an organisation’s culture.

Take the test by listening to conversations. Do people use the words ‘we’ when they speak about the people in the company, or do they use the words ‘them’ and ‘us’ when they speak of other departments or of management and staff?

In short, the more frequently you hear the word ‘we’ the more people in the organisation feel a sense of belonging and engagement. Without the ‘we’ word there is no teamwork.
