8 Ways To Tackle Work-Related Stress Head On

1. Detach

Step back, look from the outside at the issues that you are responding to in a stressful way. We always have a choice about how we respond to events.

What is a more effective way for you to respond?

2. Examine what is really important to you

Distinguish between what is really important to you in the bigger scheme of things and the issues that you are allowing to bug you – which over time will be forgotten and viewed as trivial.

3. Take more exercise

Exercise increases blood flow to the brain, releases hormones that stimulate the nervous system and produces chemicals such as beta-endorphin, which is proven to have a positive effect on how we feel.

Even a quick walk around the block during a quiet time will have a positive impact.

4. Don't try to control the uncontrollable

Trying to control things that are uncontrollable or outside your control is a waste of energy. Focus on what you can control, including your response to the uncontrollable!

5. Time management

Become more aware of how you are spending your time. At work, do it, delegate it or dump it and learn to say 'no' to requests you deem unreasonable.

6. Stop trying to be perfect

Trying to do everything perfectly creates stress. Yes, aim to do your best, but if it is good enough, it is good enough!

7. Share your worries

Talk to someone, off-load, loneliness is an ally of stress, so sharing the burden is essential. Remember the saying, a problem shared!

8. Relaxation methods

Explore and use relaxation methods like yoga, meditation, massage - they do work if given a chance. Making time for hobbies and other interests is also a great way to reduce stress.
